Trauma-Informed Care centres on understanding people through empathy rather than judgment. The six principles—safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural awareness—remind us that many individuals carry experiences that shape how they interact with their environment and other people. When environments prioritise physical and emotional safety, people are more likely to feel respected and open to engagement. Trust and transparency further strengthen this foundation by reducing fear and uncertainty.
What stands out most to me is the emphasis on empowerment, voice, and choice. Trauma often involves a loss of control, and restoring autonomy can be deeply healing. By collaborating with individuals and honouring their lived experiences, trauma-informed care shifts power dynamics and supports resilience. Overall, these principles encourage us to respond with compassion, patience, and awareness, fostering spaces where healing and connection are possible, rather than unintentionally causing harm.
